Painting
Hollywood Africans
A square canvas of roughly seven feet, painted almost entirely yellow and covered in handwriting. Three heads sit in the right half: Jean-Michel Basquiat and the two artists who travelled with him from New York to Los Angeles, the rap musician Rammellzee and the painter Toxic. Around them are the words SUGAR CANE, TOBACCO, GANGSTERISM, MOVIE STAR FOOTPRINTS and WHAT IS BWANA?, many of them crossed out. The Whitney Museum of American Art reads them as the limited roles old Hollywood left to Black actors.
