The book

Who they are in the book
Spoiler-freeThe unnamed Jewish student refuses or resists Wave pressure and is beaten by members who use an antisemitic slur. He remains offstage, which reflects how victims can become evidence in other people’s debate. His attack is one of the clearest signs that the movement has passed from enthusiasm into ideological violence. The novel does not give his later recovery in detail.
