The book

Who they are in the book
Spoiler-freeBlock is a grain merchant whose case has continued for five years. He has hired several lawyers, neglected his business, and surrendered much of his dignity in the hope of influencing the court. Huld humiliates him in front of Josef and makes him kneel beside the bed. The novel does not resolve Block’s case; his prolonged submission is the warning.
