Who they are in the book
Spoiler-freeTitorelli is a painter who produces portraits for court judges and inherits his court connections from his father. He explains that genuine acquittal is nearly impossible and offers only apparent acquittal or indefinite postponement. His studio is crowded, overheated, and surrounded by girls who seem to know the court’s secrets. He sells Josef several nearly identical landscapes and remains part of the system.
