Who they are in the book
Spoiler-freeU is the older woman who supervises D-503’s building and behaves toward him with possessive, maternal concern. She believes she is protecting him and reports information to the Guardians when his behavior becomes dangerous. D-503 comes to view her as a betrayer, though she sees loyalty to the state as care. She is attacked amid the rebellion; the novel does not clearly establish that she dies.

That journey became her first published book. Two years later, on a lake in Switzerland, she began her second.
