Who they are in the book

Spoiler-free

Mrs. Bowles is another of Mildred’s friends. She speaks casually about children, politics, and failed marriages and reacts to the poem with hostility. She represents a culture trained to treat emotional disturbance as an attack. Her later fate is unknown and, like Mildred, she may have remained in the city.
