Haik is a military leader and one of Windrip’s lieutenants. He favors direct force over Sarason’s theatrical style. After killing Sarason and taking power, he launches a war against Mexico to restore national unity and his own legitimacy. The plan produces wider rebellion. He remains head of the regime at the novel’s unresolved ending.
