The book

Who they are in the book
Spoiler-freeDemaere Oiie is an A-Ioti physicist who serves as one of Shevek’s hosts. At first he treats the Anarresti visitor with suspicion and assumes his society is crude. Bringing Shevek home introduces him to Oiie’s wife, children, and sister Vea and gives Shevek his closest look at privileged family life on Urras. Oiie gradually develops real affection and respect for him. He survives the events of the novel, but their relationship is left interrupted.
