Who they are in the book
Spoiler-freeTirin is a clever childhood friend whose questions about Urras become increasingly dangerous to Anarresti conformity. As an adult, he writes a satirical play that exposes the moon’s fear of outsiders. No court sentences him, but unfavorable work assignments, public suspicion, and compulsory treatment gradually break him down. By the time Shevek asks after him, Tirin has been sent to a therapy institution on Segvina Island and obsessively repeats the play. His later fate is not resolved.

That journey became her first published book. Two years later, on a lake in Switzerland, she began her second.
