Who they are in the book

Spoiler-free

Gvarab is an elderly Anarresti physicist whose work on simultaneity has been neglected. She gives Shevek intellectual companionship and confirms that his ideas are not merely youthful rebellion. Her decline and death with little public recognition deepen his fear that Anarres wastes difficult, original minds while praising equality. She dies before the central political break that sends him to Urras.
