Who they are in the book
Spoiler-freeMitis is the senior physicist at Northsetting who first recognizes the scale of Shevek’s ability. She is a generous teacher and warns him that moving to Abbenay will place him under Sabul, who may exploit rather than develop his work. Mitis represents mentorship without possession. She stays at Northsetting, and the novel does not follow her later fate.
